EV Lacertae's a star—with some serious flare

According to NASA, a really small star had an intense solar flare around the end of April 2008. NASA’s Swift satellite captured the flare, which was thousands of times more powerful than any other solar flare observed.

Aside from all the interesting science, the image is amazingly beautiful.

Chocolate BETA [1]

There’s a new startup in town, with a sweet BETA product already available. Nope, not an iPhone-compatible social networking geo-tagged video blogaroni widget. It’s chocolate! Dark, chocolatey, free trade beans cooked up right in the heart of historic Pier 17 in SFCA. Ex-NASA scientist and Wired magazine co-founder partnered up to actually make chocolate rather than re-melt it as the majority of chocolatiers do. Seems like they’re really doing in up in a grand style. Plenty to read on their site as well as a NYT article.

You can buy the chocolate from their site. The latest release is: Beta C Ghana 0.7x, but changes will occur fairly rapidly according to user feedback and other experimentation.

EMEK + Erykah Badu

EMEK’s work for Erykah Badu is 100% badass! I’m literally blown away with how bold and beautiful it is. He made several things for her latest album (all shit hot!), plus there’s tons of other really nice posters as well. Check his stuff out here.

EMEk designed the cover for Erykah’s new album as well. Without the artwork, the album stands on it’s own. But, his art is a helluva compliment to this great new album!

Dulce Pinzón - Superheroes

What is a hero? Dulce Pinzón asks this question and focuses on a very common, unsung hero—immigrants. More specifically, he targets the Mexican immigrant in New York. He’s introduced an interesting juxtaposition of American and Mexican superhero characters and the many different jobs that Mexicans living in New York City perform. As far as their “hero” credibility, Mr Pinzón states how much money they send back home to Mexico. I would argue that these people’s potential “hero factor” increases as they contribute in many other ways aside from sending money to their home country.

On one hand, it’s a politically-charged statement that forces one to think about the current situation of illegal immigration, stereotypes, etc. On the other hand, they’re great photographs by combining a surreal element in a concrete environment, which in my opinion could stand on it’s own.

Fusion Table

I’m a sucker for products that make me wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that!?” The idea of a dinner table converting to a pool table is brilliant. Though it’s been done before, this company has paid great detail in building this table with a careful eye for detail as well as selecting high-quality materials to make this piece shine in either application. Though I’m more of a table tennis aficionado, I’d be willing to better my pool game with this baby.
